Acupuncture
I use the two major Chinese Traditional Medicine components of acupuncture and massage in most of my treatments. Acupuncture and Chinese massage are effective for treating chronic or acute conditions affecting the physical and emotional level of people’s life.

I completed a 3-year training course to study both Chinese and Western medicine at the Reading College of Integrated Chinese Medicine. I also spent time in China to enhance my Chinese medicine training and experiences during my course at the college. Prior to this I received a PhD degree from the University of Manchester on Chinese culture. I have written articles for magazines and newspapers on the benefits of acupuncture.

I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council, the professional body for Acupuncturists in the UK. Membership requires practitioners to ensure professional standards and follow strict guidelines for practice and ethics. www.acupuncture.org.uk

All treatment is conducted in the strictest confidence and is in line with the hygiene standards required by Manchester City Council.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health, restoring the balance of our bodily function. Acupuncture treatments relieve symptoms, improve the circulation and immune system, decrease inflammation, relieve pain and relax the muscles of the whole body. Very small and fine sterilised needles are inserted into the acupuncture points just underneath the skin.

Acupuncture is said to restore the imbalance of our energy and emotions due to illness, overwork, stress, diet or injuries. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that:

the balance of our physical health and emotion relies on a smooth flow of energy (Qi) along the meridians throughout both sides of our body from feet and hands to the head. If the energy flow is too slow or too fast, obstructed or blocked, this will create pain, depression and many other chronic or acute symptoms.

I would like to explain the balance of energy flow in the meridians as like a water drainage pipe system in our homes. If part of the pipe has been obstructed or blocked somewhere in the system, the balance of smooth flow of water will be affected. The whole drainage system will eventually be halted if the blockages inside the pipes are not cleared out.

A more scientific explanation from acupuncture clinical studies shows that

the stimulation of acupuncture points on our body can release certain hormones and chemicals that can reduce pain, regulate the endocrine system, and calm the nervous system. Acupuncture regulates serotonin in the brain, with relief of muscle spasms and increased T-cell count which stimulates the immune system. Acupuncture can stimulate nerves which transmit impulses to the hypothalamic-pituitary system at the base of our brain.
